Editorial
About this edition
This page is not part of the memoir. The memoir text is on the chapter pages, unchanged except for the small notes described below.
The text
Nicholas A. Hryhorczuk wrote the autobiography, his daughter typed it, and his grandson Rene Nicholas Bilodeau prepared the copy dated 14 April 2011. The introduction is Bilodeau’s. Nicholas is Michael Wood’s great-grandfather. The source scan is source/original.pdf. The reading text is taken from text/chapters/, in the order of text/chapters.json.
The prose is not modernised. Obvious OCR errors and a few typed slips had already been corrected in those files; the list is in text/OCR-NOTES.md. This edition does not add further silent changes.
Names left as typed
The family compared the clean copy with the typescript and asked that these stay exactly as typed. Handwritten margin suggestions are not written into the sentences. A short note sits beside the word instead.
- Wasyl Syrotuik — the margin repeats “Syrotuik” above the underlined name. Note: [margin: Syrotuik].
- Slyziuk — the typescript read “Slzuik”; a margin note, and the spelling used elsewhere, corrected it before this edition. Note: [margin correction; typed “Slzuik”].
- Hegrych — margin “Negrych(?)”. The typed spelling stands. Note: [margin: Negrych(?)].
- Tokarcuk — margin “Tokarchuk”. The typed spelling stands. Note: [margin: Tokarchuk].
- Ivan Maschuich — margin “Masciuch/Masciuk”. The typed spelling stands. Note: [margin: Masciuch/Masciuk].
- “Mr. Theodore Bodnar,” in a list of ladies, is followed by [sic]. It is not changed to Mrs.
- The politics chapter spells the name Markroff three times and Markoff once. Both stay. [sic] follows only the single “Markoff”.
In “Community Work” the sentence is printed as typed, including the gap: “listen attentively of several new immigrants who were Ivan Hrychyk, Ivan Virstuk, brothers Fichuk, and began staging plays.”
Other spellings the OCR notes flagged, and which this edition also leaves as typed:
- Ruydachek
- Wasl Pernerowski
- Wichkowski
- Skorbohach
- Hykaway
- Zaporzan
- Ternawsky
- Maksymetz
- Gniazdowski
- Yakimschak
- Bachynsky
- Butka
- Euchachky
- Balenec
- Borshiw
- Sokolskoho
- Ubynyk
Also left as typed: “ban cutters,” “two or three small stacks of thresh,” “a friend to mine (Batryn),” and “We arrive at Portage.”
The map and the timeline may give a modern spelling, such as Kolomyia for Kolomaya, or Seech beside Sich. Those pages are marked Editorial and are not the memoir.
